Chain of Custody (COC) Sample Collection
Samples for a DNA test, such as a paternity test, are routinely collected using a buccal swab which is a single tipped cotton swab, made of the special absorbent material to which skin cells cling easily. The cotton swab is then placed in a special breathable envelope and transported to the laboratory
Samples are collected using a documenting chain-of-custody process which ensures your results will be accepted by courts and other government agencies. For this process, a neutral third-party, such as a trained sample collection technician, doctor, local laboratory, or hospital, collect your samples. You must be identified at the sample collection appointment; therefore, you are required to do the following in order to meet the chain of custody requirements:
- Present government-issued identification for the adults
- Present one of the following for minors: birth certificate, social security card, crib card, or shot record
- Be photographed and fingerprinted
- Complete a Client Identification and Consent Form (minor’s form must be signed by legal guardian)
